As multilingual speaker, the one thing I struggle with is how to write a proper email to my peers. Because most of time I don't know how to keep things very direct, short and precise. My brain is always working hard and overdrive because I am constantly translating four different languages to come up with one short answer for the questions that has been asked. So sometimes when you read the email that I respond back either it will be too long or complicated to understand. This is why I am working hard to slow down, read and understand before I respond. I know sometimes it might not look like that and I just give sloppy answer but that not it. In actuality, I did spend lot of time writing and rewriting but at time I feel overwhelmed, so I just quickly respond to it and move on.
Very honest and direct reflection on your email etiquette, Mary!
ReplyDeleteI am proud of your ambition and follow through in improving your writing communication :-)
I'm sure you'll overcome this obstacles the more emails you send/receive. Everything comes with time.
ReplyDeleteHi Mary, I totally understand. I only have to jog in between two languages and sometimes it's very difficult. You are doing great, keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteI definitely get that being someone that speaks two languages it can be difficult at times but with time and practice you will overcome this hardship and be sending emails like a professional.
ReplyDeleteIt's very impressive that you are able to translate four different languages. I know it will get better over time, you're doing great!
ReplyDeleteMy brain is also on overdrive most of the time. I understand your struggles as a multilingual. I have in the U.S. for so many years already, and I still have a tough time conveying my messages.
ReplyDeleteNot only is email etiquette important, but all communication through technology. It has taken me a long time, I will admit, but the importance of etiquette online can make or break us. Especially when trying to come off as professional as possible, miscommunication can easily happen. Impressive that you think in four languages! I myself struggle with the two I do know, kudos to you. Not a lot of people can actually manage that.
ReplyDeleteI can only imagine having to translate many different languages in your head before coming up with something that makes sense. I sometimes find myself being too formal at times in emails or texts.
ReplyDeleteImpressive! I can't imagine what it would be like trying to translate multiple languages in my mind. I have a hard enough time doing it with Spanish. I think you're doing a great job!
ReplyDeleteI understand the bit of slowing down and checking my work because writing has always been one of my most subjects and I think faster than I write.
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine how hard it is to learn that quick. Awesome to see you pulling through.
ReplyDeleteI cannot relate more to this! For us who speak different language and have to use your second language all the time it is very hard and energy consuming but you got this!
ReplyDeleteHi Mary, don't worry. English is not my first language, and the same thing happens to me. Over time, it is something that will get easier.
